![]() By Adam Daffern, Technical Services Manager A local quarry contacted Westin Drives looking to improve energy efficiency. Its electricity bill for a large stone-cutter was increasing significantly and they asked us for solutions. The motor powering the saw was out of date, so our technical services department proposed a new 90kW IE4 motor and a variable speed drive. The control system was also outdated, so a new one was specified and more automatic controls were developed to the customer’s request. These allow operators to spend their time more efficiently on other tasks, such as loading the other saws. The job entailed a full machine retrofit with new electrical panel, tray work and cabling, including fitting of the new motor. As a further benefit, the Siemens PLC and HMI allow future expansion and connection to their servers for tracking of production statistics.
