![]() By Steve Ormondroyd, Workshop Manager We have been asked to balance this 85kg fan impeller, manufactured by a Batley-based customer. It will be done to the customer's desired grade and rated speed according to ISO 21940-11. The two machines at Westin Drives allow us to accurately balance rotors from 200g up to 2000kg and we provide certificates with all items we balance to give customers confidence in our service. For impellers, the machine has a maximum length of 1.9 metres, a maximum swing of 1.9 metres and the maximum weight is around 1.5 tonnes. By Steve Ormondroyd, Workshop Manager An Atlas Copco industrial air compressor was sent to us with a leaking seal which had caused the stator to fill with oil. After a thorough examination in our workshop, our engineers gave the motor a complete service using an Atlas Copco service kit. The customer wanted it back for a Thursday so were pleased to complete the repair and have the compressor tested and ready for dispatch early on the Wednesday morning. By Richard Bruffell, Internal Sales A geared motor essential to powering a conveyer in a town's waste recycling plant was failing. It needed replacing and downtime must be minimised. Could we help? Our solution was to replace the old Flender helical bevel gearbox with a Radicon unit, built in our workshop from stock component parts, plus a new IE3 premium efficiency WEG electric motor, also from stock. To ensure a swift changeover, the Radicon unit was made to slot straight into place in the customer’s plant. The build took Oliver our engineer just three hours from start to finish. Westin Drives is pleased to be a Radicon distributor, stockist and assembly centre for West Yorkshire and we welcome any enquiries. ![]() By Fraser Lynch, Operations Manager It still seems to be a little known fact in industry how much money motor users can save by upgrading to higher efficiency models. One of our customers was notified of a dramatic increase in the company's electricity bill and turned to Westin Drives for advice on where to save energy. Starting with long running, larger machines, three 90kW motors were picked out as prime candidates. It was worked out using WEG’s online calculator that upgrading to IE4 motors would create an annual saving of around 21,000kWh of energy, per motor, equating to a 1.4 year payback on investment. Could you be saving this sort of money on your site? Please contact us to see how we can help you combat the recent rises in electricity bills with our range of energy-efficient motors. ![]() We recently supplied a Radicon geared motor to a prestigious customer within the food and drink manufacturing industry. It replaced a failed SEW unit. Here you can see the application, a Lazy Susan. The replacement unit needed to match the shaft and flange diameters exactly and also be capable of vertical mounting underneath the table. Prepared by the team in our Huddersfield-based workshop, the unit was built from stock components for immediate despatch. We are a Radicon distributor, stockist and assembly centre for West Yorkshire – please don’t hesitate to get in touch to discuss your own requirements. ![]() We’ve recently achieved the ISO 14001:2015, an internationally recognised Environmental Management Certification. This complements the naturally environmentally-conscious aspects of our industry such as our minimal waste in machinery repair, retrofit and efficiency upgrades. ISO 14001:2015 specifies the requirements for an environmental management system that we can use to enhance our environmental performance. Consistent with our environmental policy, the intended outcomes of the environmental management system include:
![]() Of the seven award categories in the 2022 AEMT Awards, Westin Drives was delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist for the Contribution to Skills & Training Award. Adam Daffern, one of our highly-skilled Electrical Engineers, was also nominated as a finalist for the Rising Star Award. Since he joined us in 2018 part-way through his HNC, he’s been an integral member of our team in many ways. After supporting Adam in his completion of an apprenticeship and university studies, the result of his hard work and dedication was a First-Class Honours Degree from the University of Huddersfield. Adam’s journey of progression has seen him involved in the research and implementation of control system remote access solutions, providing our customers with outstanding support and developing two junior Apprentices in his department. All that’s left to say is congratulations to all of the finalists – yet again, it was a fantastic event and a great opportunity to celebrate many achievements within the Electrical and Mechanical industry. Westin Drives shortlisted as finalist for Contribution to Skills and Training at AEMT Awards25/10/2022 ![]() On November 17 Westin Drives will be attending the 2022 AEMT Awards – a fantastic event celebrating achievements within the Electrical and Mechanical industry. Seven award categories have been chosen to demonstrate excellence in the Electrical and Mechanical trades. Here at Westin Drives, we’re delighted to have been shortlisted as a finalist for the Contribution to Skills & Training Award. Our story is a simple one: we identified a lack of experience in the sector like many industries and needed to come up with a solution ourselves. In the main, this is based on:
In addition, we source training from our Manufacturer partners WEG, SKF, Sprint Electric, Radicon and LENZE for specific product training. So far this has worked well for us and we are proud to be recognised for this commitment by the AEMT. Here you can see a relatively old 75kw Siemens motor we have repaired for one of our customers in the plastics industry. The customer complained that the motor was noisy on run down. After it was dismantled and assessed, we found that the grease was degraded and the bearings were showing their age. The motor was given a thorough service which included the rotor balancing to G2.5 and new SKF bearings fitted. The test run and condition monitoring proved that the motor was returned to a healthy condition following our service. After a fresh paint job, the motor is now ready to be returned to the customer and re-commissioned. ![]() This is a slip ring motor we have just refurbished and which is ready to be dispatched. It was manufactured by The English Electric Co Ltd. There is no date on it but we estimated around 1960. Despite its substantial size, it’s only rated at 45 H.P and when in operation the motor drives a pump. It’s always a pleasure to work on these motors as they are a piece of British engineering history. It was also very well manufactured – even decades later, with the correct maintenance such motors continue to operate for many years. |
