Our engineers were called in to inspect when a large flash was seen from the commutator/brush gear of a 1000 HP DC motor.
When they arrived at the Huddersfield site of the industrial manufacturer, they noticed signs of arcing and damage to the commutator and advised that the eight-tonne motor needed to be serviced.
The largest by power and weight that we have handled, it was delivered to our service centre where it was carefully dismantled. Our engineers ensured everything was correctly marked up as several smaller motors were mounted to the main motor, such as forced vents and grease circulating motors, which we also serviced.
We thoroughly cleaned years of carbon and grime from within the motor which we suspected was probably a large part of the problem. The commutator was skimmed and undercut and new carbon brushes were fitted. All the windings within the motor were meticulously tested and all bearing surfaces measured to check they were within tolerance.
Finally our engineers reassembled the motor with its new bearings and ancillaries and delivered it back to the manufacturer. The picture shows the field after cleaning and testing.
