By Steve Ormondroyd, Workshop Manager A Nord motor gearbox which drives a rotating table from a shot blaster had failed. The customer who brought it in needed a swift solution for this critical piece of plant. The gears were shredded, but a repair was unfeasible given the lack of time. And a new unit from Nord had a minimum lead time of three weeks. Instead, our engineers managed to match the original Nord gearbox, below, with a Radicon C series helical worm gearbox, complete with a WEG motor, above. The existing mounting plate was modified to match the pitch circle diameter of the Radicon gearbox by laser cutting an adapter plate and welding it into the mounting bracket. Result: the customer will be back up and running in a days instead of weeks.

By Steve Ormondroyd, Workshop Manager This 400kW ABB motor from a pump application, above, suffered a bearing failure at the non-drive end which also damaged the bearing cap and bearing housing. Our engineers repaired the housing, fitted a new bearing cap, balanced the rotor to G2.5 and replaced the bearings before rebuilding the motor, below, and giving it a final test run. An extract from the surge test report can be seen below. ,For customers with electric motor problems, Westin Drives is the first emergency service. Take Friday, when we received a call from a large confectionary manufacturer faced with a motor and gearbox failure on one of its lines. A quick solution was required to get the line back up and running and we collected the damaged units at once. But inspection showed that a repair, while possible, would have taken several days. So we proposed that we supply a new motor and build a new gear box using a our Radicon rapid build facility. The solution was accepted and both units were returned to a delighted customer on Saturday morning. A senior engineering manager at the company said: "The new gearbox seems much quieter and smoother than the SEW so the operations staff are very pleased. Thank you for the efforts and swift comms over the weekend, much appreciated." By Steve Ormondroyd, Workshop Manager We received an order from a large fan manufacturer to modify four new WEG motors to meet their customer's requirements. As WEG approved repair agents and authorised distributors, we can carry out these modifications in accordance with WEG’s procedures. PT-100 temperature sensors are being fitted to the bearing housings to allow the user of the motors to monitor bearing temperature as an early warning tool to prevent catastrophic mechanical failure. We are approved by WEG carry out various modifications on new WEG motors. so if you have any requirements, please get in touch. |
