By Michael Limb A customer requested an urgent repair of a Siemens programmable logic controller which had failed, stopping one of their main production lines. On receiving the faulty unit, our expert electronics engineers rapidly diagnosed a fault with the internal power supply. The required parts were in stock so we were able to complete the necessary repairs within hours and return the unit to the customer to restore operations with minimum downtime. The customer later commented: 'Thanks for the brilliant response today, much appreciated.' Our versatile team has extensive experience of a wide range of inverters and industrial electronic equipment and specialises in repairing obsolete equipment.

By Wayne Smith A Westin Drives repair engineer puts the finishing touches to this 55kW ac motor. The motor, which had been sent to us for repair, was rewound by one of our experienced team and special thermistors were fitted for each phase. On inspection, it was found that the rotor shafts were worn, so these were metal sprayed by our sister company Westin Engineering. The housing was checked and the motor is now ready for return to the customer. Westin Drives is pleased to be able to supply a range of first-class products from stock. They include inverters, electric motors, geared motors, control systems, pumps, PLCs, software, fans and DC and slip ring drives. The quality will be top class, as they are sourced from trusted manufacturers such as Lenze, WEG, Sprint Electric, Garbarino and Radicon. You can be assured that our products are backed by excellent service and support. At Westin Drives, we are proud of our record in training apprentices, several of whom have progressed to managerial responsibilities. Most of our recruits undergo a mix of college day-release and on-the-job training. As we are renowned for our expertise in rewinding and repairing motors, we believe it is important that our young apprentices learn the key skills and processes involved. The work calls for great care and a meticulous approach to detail. In the picture, Workshop Manager Steve Ormondroyd, himself a former apprentice, offers guidance on rewinding a small motor to apprentice Callum Moorhouse. By Oliver Lowe Our engineers came to the rescue of a local company whose oven door was operated by a failing motor gearbox. Speed was vital, so we specified a new Radicon Series M inline helical gearbox from our stock. The old gearbox was outputting 125RPM and, with a ratio of 11.36, we were able to achieve this speed. The unit arrived with a gear hub mounted on the output shaft which connected with a worm gear controlling the oven door. To minimise customer down time, we reused this from the original unit. The only machining required was to bore and key the gear hub to 20mm//6mm keyway, which was done by our sister company Westin Engineering. To ensure it would work correctly, it needed to overhang the shaft. To achieve this, our engineering team manufactured a spacer. As both companies are based in the same works, machining work can be done quickly, avoiding the need for third-party intervention. The old motor was replaced by a new WEG 0.55kW 4Pole IE3 standard motor from stock and, after assembly by our skilled team, the motor gearbox was resprayed. The old and new units were then sent to our customer via overnight courier. Note: Within our Radicon stock, we hold many different parts suitable for different applications, having units with hollow bores or output shafts, with the addition of output flanges, feet mounting and pre-stages. Its electricity bill for a large stone-cutter was increasing significantly and they asked us for solutions. The motor powering the saw was out of date, so our technical services department proposed a new 90kW IE4 motor and a variable speed drive. The control system was also outdated, so a new one was specified and more automatic controls were developed to the customer’s request. These allow operators to spend their time more efficiently on other tasks, such as loading the other saws. The job entailed a full machine retrofit with new electrical panel, tray work and cabling, including fitting of the new motor. As a further benefit, the Siemens PLC and HMI allow future expansion and connection to their servers for tracking of production statistics. As an authorised distributor and repair agent of WEG electric motors, it was a pleasure to visit the company's UK head office. After a tour of the warehouse, workshop and departments across its premises in Worcestershire, our team went through WEG's VSD and motor training for updates on developments to WEG's product lines. Fraser Lynch, Operations Director at Westin Drives, said: 'The importance of close relationships with our partners can’t be overstated. 'While some companies just shift boxes, we offer a complete service, from specification to commissioning. The only way this can be achieved is by constant training and up to date, in-depth product knowledge.' Pictured: The Westin Drives team: Oliver, Mika, Oliver, Richard and Fraser. Production of Lenze's long running 3200C, p500, p300 and c300 controller ranges is to end as Microsoft has discontinued the Windows CE operating system. So we would like to remind customers of an approaching deadline. Westin Drives can take orders to supply the old products up to December 21 – and these units will be built to order. If you choose to hold spares for breakdowns, your orders will be needed before this date. Delivery will be three to four months, depending on the demand for final orders. You may choose to migrate any spares requirements to the following current products: c430 / c5x0, v430/v450.
